NCAA Final Four History

NCAA Mens FinalThe NCAA Division I basketball tournament was inaugurated in 1939 and won by the Oregon Ducks who defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 46-33. Today, there are 65 teams who participate in the NCAA Division I basketball tournament. There are 31 teams who qualify by virtue of winning their individual conference tournaments. The team with the best regular season record in the IVY League also earns a berth, since the conference does not have a post-season tournament. The remainder of the teams are selected by an NCAA committee. The tournament bracket is divided into four regions. The top 16 teams who proceed to the regional semi-finals are known as The Sweet Sixteen, and the 8 teams who continue to the regional finals are known as the Elite Eight. Finally, the winners of the respective regional finals are known as The Final Four. The UCLA Bruins have claimed the most NCAA championships with 11, followed by the Kentucky Wildcats with 7, the Indiana Hoosiers and the North Carolina Tar Heels (2009 Champion) with 5.

The game was played at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. Can the Tarheels repeat as champions?
