Sony Ericsson Open (Nasdaq 100 Open) History

The first Sony Ericsson Open will take place on the Island of Key Biscayne in Miami Florida, March 26 April 6, 2008. This tournament attracts more than 270,000 spectators as the leading international professional tennis tournament outside the four Grand Slams. Reigning champions Roger Federer and Svetlana Kuznetsova return to the tournament as 96 men and 96 women compete for the $6.9 million equal prize fund.

In 2006, Federer defeated Ivan Ljubicic in three close sets and joined Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi as the only male back-to-back winners in the tournament's 22-year history. A third title would match Federer with Agassi, the champion from 2001-03. On the womens side, Kuznetsova added the 2006 title to her 2004 Sony Ericsson crown with a straight set victory over Maria Sharapova.
